Creativity in the Kingdom

Everyone of us is uniquely creative. In fact all of mankind was created in God’s image. He placed His nature of creativity in our very design, this is the reason you don’t have to be a Christian to be creative. It’s not just for a chosen few, YOU were born with creativity already built in. Let that sink in for a moment … yip no matter what you think about yourself, you actually are creative and it’s in your DNA!

  • You might not consider yourself to be ‘the arty type’ but would you believe it if I told you that you don’t need to be artistic to be creative?

Creativity is expressed so differently in every individual. Each of us has an imagination, we all have skills, we like to create solutions to problems, and we like to produce things.

The only difference is that we as Christians can do all these things differently from those in the world as we have the Holy Spirit residing in us. Our attitude to creating is different as we are His image bearers! We don’t create to receive the praise of man but to give glory back to the Lord. In fact being creative touches every part of our lives.

The word Create just means to make or bring into existence something new.

Suppressing Creativity

I think pride suppresses creativity as some of us don’t want to be vulnerable in front of others. We leave ourselves open and vulnerable when we share our work with the public and let them critique it. Quite frankly it’s the fear of rejection that prevents many of us sharing our creativity with others.

Think back to your childhood, worrying about pride and egos didn’t seem to matter when we were sons and daughters at home. We were so happy with our latest creations and accomplishments. Those ‘Look what I made moments‘ were praised and encouraged. But along this journey things change as we become adults and for some, the fear of rejection sets in.

The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy

Here’s the thing – if our creativity is God-given, then our enemy satan wants to steal it. He wants to hinder and prevent us from expressing it. The last thing he wants is for us to give glory back to the Lord. He wants to rob us of our potential and rob us from investing in the Kingdom.

I like how the dictionary uses these words to describe the opposite of ‘create’ as it describes satan’s tactics perfectly.

impede, restrict, dampen, put down, destroy

You see, our creativity reminds satan that we are sons and daughters made in our Father’s image, ‘partakers of the divine nature’ and our mandate is to rule over God’s creation. Satan was created to serve us and jealously motivates him to prevent us from expressing our creativity.

We Are Creative Image Bearers

When we create, we participate in God’s family business as well as investing in our inheritance. Whatever we create, no matter how mundane it may seem we do it to the best of our God-given abilities and with diligence. It might take lots of time to complete and a huge amount of effort on our part, but the results will always bring glory and honour to Him.

God’s children should be the exact opposite of satan and encourage creativity in each other as we build in His Kingdom.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord ~ Colossians 3:23
